HLG Avenges Early Season Loss Over Bulldogs

Sunday, February 01, 2015

Springfield, Ill.~ The Bulldogs could not connect when it counted, falling in a 65-59 decision to the Trojans of Hannibal-LaGrange University (Mo.) on Saturday afternoon. BenU Springfield falls to 6-8 in the American Midwest Conference, 9-12 on the year.

HLG jumped out to an 7-0 lead quickly in the first, causing a frustrated Bulldog offense to turn the ball over. After settling back into a groove, BenU Springfield would climb back to within two after switching to the press and transferring the turnovers to the Trojan offense. With four seconds left to play, Myles Harvell would steal the ball on the inbounds pass and drain a three to go up 27-26 as time expired. The momentum shift would carry over for the Bulldogs into the second half, but Hannibal-LaGrange would not back down and would pull away again in the waning moments of the half and hang on for the win.

Harvell finished the evening with 16 points for the Bulldogs, including three three-pointers. Darius Stallworth and Clavontae Brown were just shy of double figures, each scoring nine points. Both teams were nearly identical in play, the Bulldogs shooting .440 and Trojans shooting .442 from the field. The difference came at the charity stripe with HLG going 22 for 30.

The Bulldogs will make their longest road trip this week, traveling to the state of Arkansas to take on Lyon College and Williams Baptist College on Thursday and Saturday. Live stats will be available on Thursday evening against the Eagles while full live game coverage against the Scots will be on the Bulldog Sports Network on Saturday afternoon.
