BenU Softball Picks Up AMC Split Weekend

Springfield, Ill.~ The Bulldogs hosted back-to-back American Midwest Conference (AMC) match-ups on Friday and Saturday afternoon, coming out with a 2-2 record on the weekend. BenU Springfield took two from Stephens College (Mo.) before falling to the Cougars of Columbia College (Mo.)

Game 1 (BenU 2, Stephens 0) Kelley McMahon held on for the six-hit shutout in game one against the Stars of Stephens College on Friday afternoon. McMahon tossed all seven innings with six strikeouts and zero walks in 26 at-bats. Stephens College outhit the Bulldogs 6-3, but BenU Springfield used key singles and sacrifice hits to move runners across the plate for the victory. Katie Stapleton and Hannah Dudley picked up the RBIs.

Game 2 (BenU 6, Stephens 4) Three Bulldogs doubled in game two to pick up the sweep over the Stars, moving to 7-9 in the AMC. SC did not make it easier, coming within two in the bottom of the seventh, but the Bulldog defense behind hurler Katie Stapleton was able to pick the last out for the win. Kerri Beasley was 2 for 2 with two RBIs in the victory, followed by Shannon Stuart (2-3, RBI) and Monica DeVault (1-3, 2 RBIs) Stapleton collected eight K's from the mound, with four runs on nine hits given up.

Game 1 (Columbia 10, BenU 1) The Bulldogs broke up the shutout on a Gabby Oldani double to score Miranda Langen, who reached on a fielder's choice. Columbia held the Bulldogs to just four hits in game one, including doubles by Katie Stapleton and Oldani, both in the seventh. Abbie Watton and Kelley McMahon both worked the mound, Watton absorbing the loss (6R, 8H, 0K).

Game 2 (Columbia 5, BenU 3) Columbia College jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, but BenU answered just as quick on an Gabbi Oldani single, driving in Shannon Stuart who doubled to start off the second. The Bulldogs took their first lead of the doubleheader, Stuart a part of the mix once again, doubling to deep left-center to score Nicole Ramirez and Kerri Beasley. The Cougar bats proved too strong, tacking on three more runs to hand BenU the loss. Katie Stapleton suffered the loss, tossing the complete game with five runs on seven hits and adding six more strikeouts to her season total of 116 (3rd in AMC, 34th in NAIA).

The Bulldogs take on Williams Baptist College on Wednesday, April 16 in a rescheduled twinbill, starting at 1:00 p.m. at Padre Canella Field. They will travel next to future AMC opponent, St. Louis College of Pharmacy on Saturday, April 19 before heading into the last week of regular season play.
