Thursday, April 17, 2014

Springfield, Ill.~ Benedictine University at Springfield unleashed their bats and turned up the defense on Wednesday, taking the sweep over AMC-foe Hannnibal-LaGrange University (Mo.) The Bulldogs outhit the Trojans 20-7 between the two victories.

BenU 8, HLG 1 (Game 1)

Abbie Watton allowed just one run on six hits for her seventh victory of the season, sitting down three and allowing only one walk in 25 batters. The Bulldogs wasted no time getting on the board in the bottom of the first; Monica DeVault singled down the right field line to bring home Nicole Ramirez, who reached on a walk. The Trojans picked up their lone run in the second and would hang on to the tie until the bottom of the sixth. BenU Springfield used eight hits to score six, including two singles, an RBI and a run scored by Dakota Swingler. Shannon Stuart doubled to deep-right center, scoring Kerri Beasley to add another to the 8-1 lead as the Bulldogs cruised on to victory number one. DeVault finished 3 for 4, followed by Beasley (2-4, 2 RBIs) and Gabby Oldani (1-4, 2 RBIs). Stuart and Swingler each hit .500 (2-4) in the win.

BenU 3, HLG 0 (Game 2)

Kerri Beasley only needed three pitches in the top of the first, sending a three-run homer over the fence at straight away center to take the early lead. Nicole Ramirez reached on a fielder's choice and moved over to third on a DeVault single up the middle. Beasley sent a 2-0 strike over the fence, her second blast of the season. It was all Bulldog defense and Katie Stapleton after that as Stapleton one-hit Hannibal-LaGrange earning the shutout and the victory, her 12th of the season. Stapleton picked up nine more strikeouts, moving her total to 125, good enough for the No. 25 spot in the NAIA. Beasley ended the day at 1 for 4 with 3 RBIs, followed by DeVault at 2 for 3.

With the doubleheader sweep, the Bulldogs move to just shy of a .500 season (22-23), their best showing since moving to the NAIA in 2010. They hit the road to take on St. Louis College of Pharmacy on Saturday, April 12 at 12:00 and 2:00 p.m. in St. Louis before returning home for their last six games before the AMC Tournament.
