Monday, April 21, 2014

Springfield, Ill.~ For the first time since becoming a four-year institution, Benedictine University at Springfield Softball and Head Coach Kerry Crum have turned out their first over .500 season with two huge wins over St. Louis College of Pharmacy (Mo.) to move to 24-23 on the year.

Game One: BenU 15, STLCOP 0 (5 Innings)

Seven Bulldogs banged out doubles in game one, scoring in every inning but the third for the first win of the day. Almost every BenU player recorded a base knock in the game, with multiple Bulldogs driving in runs in their at-bats. Not only did Monica DeVault go a perfect 2 for 2 at the plate, she recorded three RBIs, a double and her fourth HR of the season. Kerri Beasley was right behind, going 2 for 4 with four runs batted in. Shannon Stuart mirrored Beasley's performance (2-4, 3 RBIs) and Katie Stapleton and Nicole Ramirez each picked up 2 for 3 appearances at the plate.

Bulldog hurlers Katie Stapleton and Abbie Watton combined for the shutout, with Stapleton picking up the W. Each recorded a walk with Stapleton grabbing three strikeouts, Watton two.

Game Two: BenU 16, STLCOP 5 (6 Innings)

The Eutectics could not silence the Bulldog bats in game two, BenU Springfield scoring 16 runs on 17 hits to complete the sweep. Once again the doubles kept rattling off the bats, Stuart (2-4) and DeVault (2-4, 5 RBIs) both with two and a huge game from freshman Gabby Oldani, who went 4 for 4 with four RBIs and three doubles. STLCOP quickly took the lead in the bottom of the first, scoring four runs and holding the lead until the fifth where the Bulldogs notched eight runs. The Eutectics answered with one in the bottom of the fifth, but BenU Springfield responded with five more unanswered runs in the top of the sixth for the victory.

Kelley McMahon tossed her fourth complete game on the season for her fourth victory, going six innings with five runs on 13 hits and two strikeouts.

The Bulldogs kick off a very busy week before heading into the AMC Tournament, starting with Williams Baptist College (Ark.) on Tuesday, April 22nd at 12:00 and 2:00 p.m. BenU Springfield will honor their two Bulldog seniors, Kerri Beasley and Madeline Jiardina, on Wednesday, April 23rd when they take on Eureka College (Ill.), the twinbill starting at 3:00 p.m.
