Saturday, April 26, 2014

Springfield, Ill.~ BenU Springfield and Columbia College met for the second time this season in the first round of the American Midwest Conference tournament on Friday afternoon. The seventh-seeded Bulldogs and second-seeded Cougars each took a game in the doubleheader to force an elimination game on Saturday.

BenU 6, Columbia 3 (Game 1)

Two, three-run innings propelled the Bulldogs to victory number one. Shannon Stuart and Miranda Langen each singled in the top of the second and capitalized on an error and wild pitch to take the 3-1 lead. Three more Cougar errors and two more Bulldog hits added three more runs to the board for the Bulldogs. On a two-out rally, Katie Stapleton singled to center to score Sarah Worster. Monica DeVault came around on the bobble to score and move Stapleton to second. Gabby Oldani singled to center in the next at-bat to score Stapleton to take the 6-2 lead. The Cougars got one run back in the seventh, but Stapleton and the Bulldog defense shut down the scoring threat for the win.

Stapleton sat down eight Cougars through seven innings, allowing just three runs on nine hits.

Columbia 14, BenU 1 (Game 2)

The Cougar bats were turned on and up, dropping 14 runs on 13 hits in five innings to take game two. The Bulldogs tallied just four hits in the loss. Gabby Oldani was able to break up the shutout, sending the first pitch to her in the bottom of the seventh over the fence, her first of the year.

Kelley McMahon and Abbie Watton combined for the loss on the mound, Watton suffering the decision. Each Bulldog gave up seven runs (four earned) with one strikeout a piece.
