Bulldogs Open Up 2015 At MMC Meltdown

Sunday, February 15, 2015

Springfield, Ill.~ Benedictine University traveled to Pulaski, Tenn. for their second-year in a row to start the season at the Martin Methodist College Meltdown Tournament on Friday and Saturday. It was a rough and tumbling start for the Bulldogs as their 2015 campaign kicked off with at 0-4.

The Bulldogs faced Bryan College (Tenn.) and Grace College (Ind.) on Friday evening, suffering at the hands of the Lions 11-7 and the Knights 13-3 (5 innings). Bad weather caused cancellations in the Bulldog schedule on Saturday, forcing BenU Springfield and host Martin-Methodist into a doubleheader to finish out the tournament. MMC took both contests from the Bulldogs, 8-0 and 10-2, respectively.

Much of Head Coach Kerry Crum's young squad saw action in the games, some getting their first at-bats at the collegiate level. Seniors Katie Stapleton and Laney Thacker led the way at the plate, Stapleton going 5 for 7, including a double and a triple and three RBIs. Thacker tallied the first Bulldog homerun of the season, going 4 for 9 with two doubles and two RBIs. The team as whole hit .276 on the weekend.

With the St. Ambrose Dome Tournament cancelled for next weekend, Coach Crum wasted no time filling the lull in schedule with a twinbill versus NCAA Divisio II McKendree University (Ill.) on Wednesday, February 25th and a weekend rally to Purdue University-Calumet on Friday, February 27th.

This will be the Bulldogs' and Bearcats' first meeting between teams, while the Peregrines took a 15-3 decision last year.
