Springfield, Ill.~ Tough competition awaited Benedictine University at Springfield in their first trip to the Gulf Coast Invitational on March 6-8. The Bulldogs faced five big-time teams over the course of three days, some of the top NAIA and NCAA teams  in the nation battled in Gulf Shores, Alabama.

On Day 1, the Bulldogs hung tight to NCAA Division II Spring Hill College (Ala.), dropping a 4-0 decision. They would end the night with an 11-3 loss to NAIA member Thomas University (Ga.). Day 2 saw two more losses to Georgia Gwinnett College (8-2) who are receiving votes in the NAIA polls and a 9-0 shutout to 4th-ranked Lindsey Wilson College (Ky.). Advancing into the Bronze Bracket semifinals on Sunday, the Bulldogs faced No. 16 Central Methodist University (Mo.), suffering a 18-1 loss to end their tourney run.

Over five games, the Bulldogs were led by sophomore Dakota Swingler and senior Sarah Worster, both going 4-13 (.308) on the weekend. Worster and Gabby Oldani led with two RBIs a piece, while Nicole Ramirez dominated on the base paths with five stolen bases. Swingler recorded two bases of her own while Katie Stapleton pulled double-duty at the plate and on the mound; Stapleton recorded two hits in nine at-bats, including a double to drive in the lone run against CMU.

The Bulldogs' pitching staff logged 25.2 innings of work together while facing some of the best hitters in the NAIA. Stapleton recorded a 6.00 ERA with seven K's, with 12 hits and two batters walked. Sophomore lefty Abbie Watton was close behind with six strikeouts in 20 batters on the weekend.

The Bulldogs are scheduled to take on NCAA Division III Knox College (Ill.) on Tuesday, March 10 before opening up the 2015 American Midwest Conference schedule against St. Louis College of Pharmacy (Mo.) on Friday, March 13 and Lindenwood University-Belleville (Ill.) on Saturday, March 14.
