Women's Basketball Cancels Remainder Of Season

Thursday, January 01, 2015

Springfield, Ill.~ Benedictine University at Springfield Director of Athletics, Nikki Bull-Eguez, has announced the cancellation of the remainder of the 2014-15 Bulldog Women's Basketball season.

Bull-Eguez, along with American Midwest Conference Commissioner Will Wolper, decided on Wednesday afternoon that continuing on with limited student-athlete numbers would not be in the best interest of BenU Springfield and to the remaining conference members. BenU Springfield will suspend all remaining games effective immediately.

Earlier this year, the women's basketball program had to cancel four non-conference contests at the beginning of season due to student-athletes leaving after the October announcement of the University's closing in May. While they were able to field a team for the first six games of the AMC schedule, enrollment numbers for the spring semester were not enough to field a team sufficent enough to adequately compete.

"This was a really hard decision for us," Bull-Eguez said. "We want to represent our school and athletics department in the same way we have always done. It would not be fair to our student-athletes and the rest of the AMC teams to not put a quality product on the court each time. We are committed to being a good partner of the AMC until the end of our school year and finish the remainder of our seasons' strong."

Men's Basketball will not be effected by this decision and will play out the remainder of their AMC contests as scheduled. AD Eguez is also confident that all spring team sports, Baseball and Softball, will have sufficent numbers to compete in this last season for BenU Springfield.
